Worried about the unrest in Southern Thailand? Will it affect you if you come to Thailand to buy property? Let us put everything in perspective for you. Phuket and Koh Samui are about 600 kilometers from any civil unrest. Bangkok is more than 1,000 kilometers away. This is a problem of misunderstandings between the minority southern Thai muslims and Bangkok administrators which has continues since the southern provinces were annexed in 1906.
In fact, the three southernmost provinces have always had problems. As far back as the 16th Century European visitors reported on it, including Constantine Phaulcon, the only foreigner to ever become a Barcolan, equivalent to a Prime Minister. He and his partner, Samual White, both saw Muslim unrest, so the current round is hardly new.
Muslims in other areas of Thailand co-exist on friendly terms with their Buddhist bretheren. Security in areas where westerners tend to congregate is very good and we have never felt threatened.
The recent unrest was triggered by a group of misguided young men who were demonstrating about what they felt are unfair government policies. Those sent to quell the disturbance over-reacted. The results triggered sensational reports in the Western press, but those of us who live in other parts of Thailand have not been affected in any way. We actually feel safer here than we do when we return home to the US, UK, and other western countries where one is much more likely to be assulted or suffer the consequences of violent demonstrations.
Take a look at the maps below to see where the problem areas are and to judge distances from the most popular area where Westerners like to live, such as Phuket, Samui, Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai.
We hope this soothes any fears you may have felt and encourages you to re-consider coming here to enjoy paradise with us.
