Public Holidays each year: Thailand has the following mandated public holidays, but visitors should check with their travel agent to find out about additional holidays. Thais are a fun loving people, so they will take almost any excuse for a holiday to celebrate. They celebrate the Western, Chinese, Indian and Thai New Years as well as almost any other holidays. If a public holiday falls on a Friday or Monday (or even a Thursday or Tuesday in many cases) businesses will usually close down for a long weekend.
These are the official public holidays:
January 1, New Year's Day
April 6, Chakri Day (the Royal dynasty)
April 13-17, Songkran Festival Day (a real fun festival - throw water over each other to beat the heat) Thailand closes down for the duration, so plan your trip accordingly.
May 5, Coronation Day
August 12, H.M. The Queen's Birthday
October 23, Chulalongkorn Day (anniversary of the King who modernized Thailand)
